RABBIT HOLE

"RABBIT HOLE" is a virtual reality work. Here, a real staircase overlaps with a virtual home built in The Sims 4.
The staircase should be a "passage" connecting spaces, but now it becomes an uncrossable "gap".
Through the VR device, viewers can see that ideal, controllable simulated world, but their bodies remain bound to real physical coordinates.
The staircase's spatial features reconstruct vision and body sensation. There, the gap between simulation and reality becomes a rabbit hole—both dangerous and deeply attractive.
The technical inspiration came from an experimental VR game, Hauntify MR. The game developers used perspective and VR modeling to capture walls and stair slopes. This convinced me the concept could work.

So I used "Spatial Anchors" technology. With similar VR modeling methods, I mapped each virtual step to its real position. This required repeated testing and fine-tuning. Any slight angle error would be immediately felt by the body—for example, when your foot steps on a stair edge but the visual stair is tilted, that misalignment breaks the experience's authenticity.
The staircase is a complex field full of height differences. Since the tracking technology loses accuracy beyond 3 meters from the anchor point, I placed all anchors at the center of the stair handrail, ensuring participants stay within tracking range.

In this work, the virtual space viewers see is actually the home I built in The Sims 4.
For me, simulation games are a creation and projection of "the unreachable." In games, I can build spaces that don't exist in reality, yet I cannot truly enter them. In VR, though I make these scenes overlap with reality, my body remains constrained by physical limits.
Through RABBIT HOLE, I try to pull this projection into reality—making the real staircase into a bottomless rabbit hole, leading to a wonderland that can never truly be reached.
